Top 5 Things to Put in Your Planner in 2021

There’s a Mexican proverb that says:
“Camarón que se duerme, se lo lleva la corriente” translated to English it means:
Shrimp that falls asleep, gets carried in the current.
It can be good to go with the flow but make sure you’re heading in a direction that serves you.

Social media posts might warn you half joking not to make plans for 2021.

Afterall the best laid plans of 2020 were not only disrupted by COVID-19, they were used for toilet paper and set ablaze.

At 34, and ever the rebel, I’m committed to making plans and giving myself something to look forward to.

Humbled by the instability of 2020, my only resolutions are to be kinder, show grace to myself and others and practice gratitude.

The following list is the most basic of basics but will get you on track to goal-setting and creating the life you want.

Whether you add these old skool-style to a calendar pinned to your wall or set up your calendar on your email account, you need to make sure these items are on there.

  1. Birthdays, anniversaries, date nights and social media holidays: Marking these dates will give you plenty of time to send an email, celebratory card or budget for a gift for your nearest and dearest. COVID-19 may have put a damper on social gatherings but we can still celebrate in safe ways. By adding these to your calendar you can plan ahead.  This is about strengthening relationships and showing your loved ones you care.

  2. Health Checkups and Screenings: If you haven’t yet, this blog is your sign to schedule your annual exams. Preventative care can be less costly than an advanced diagnosis. Get your flu shot, take advantage of the services offered by your medical provider to safeguard your health. While you’re at it, pencil in a vet visit for your pet, and mark down when medication refills expire. Pharmacies like H-E-B in Texas offer lower-cost health screenings.

  3. School and Work Calendar Dates: Make a note of upcoming school or work projects on your calendar so you don’t double book yourself. If you have children, include the school district’s holiday and testing schedule in your calendar. This will help you and your family plan ahead for childcare or family outings.

  4. Your Monthly Budget: Saving up for a big purchase? Want to wipe out debt? Don’t let a late fee sneak up on you by forgetting about a bill. Write down your monthly expenses and work that budget. Review your subscriptions and expenses to make sure you’re getting your money’s worth. Write down how much you plan to save, be realistic, and enjoy the sweet satisfaction of meeting a goal.

  5. Self Care: I saved the best for last! Scheduling self-care is a smart way of prioritizing your health and wellness. Whether it’s for an hour, 15 minutes or a whole day, self-care appointments will help you recharge and pamper yourself. Self-care can also be meal-prepping, watching your favorite movie, reading a book, going to the salon, taking a walk, or whatever helps you feel like your best self. No judgment.

  1. Thanks for the great ideas.
You’re right self care needs to be a priority. Moms put their family first that they forget to take a moment for themselves.
