Adios Abuela

On January 21, 2021, my grandmother Rafaela Esparza Garza passed away at the age of 98. She raised me. She was old school. She cooked flour tortillas by hand and could grow anything.

Since I became a mother, she became my gold standard for mothering. Her love and example has not been lost on me.

Grandmothers are a special blessing and mine has been no exception. If you are facing the loss of a loved one, I send you my hugs and prayers.

I encourage you to remember this person in your daily life so that they may live on in your heart and in the world.

I will miss her dearly. I will write more about her because she’s just that wonderful.

In other news… when she passed, I become the guardian of my grandmother’s cherished Chihuahua, Rex. I affectionately call him Tio Rex because my late grandfather would call the little dog his son.

My dad actually calls him his little brother. I was nervous about taking on such a responsibility but the love and appreciation my husband and children have shown the five-pound dog has eased my mind.

He is quite particular and only eats freshly heated ground meat with salt. At the ripe age of at least 10 years, I’m inclined to give the little dog what he’s accustomed to and most importantly what he is willing to eat. I don’t think he can afford to miss any meals.

  1. Christina, I’m so sorry for your loss. My grandmother is everything to me so I can imagine the pain you’re going through.

It’s good to read that you also had such a great relationship with her, and learned a lot. To me, it is always interesting to hear stories from my grandma from when she was young and all the things she did. Even though we are generations apart, these are the powerful women who made us who we are today.

I’m very happy you now are taking care of the dog! I also have a 10-year-old dog who is very very chiflada. If you need anything please let me know ❤️

    Thank you for writing ‼️

  2. Your grandmother was one of the sweetest ladies I have ever met. It makes my heart smile when I think about her.
She must be so so happy to know Rex is well taken care of.
Thanks for being an awesome family to your fur baby.
